2023 5 Door Jimny Alpha AT GG | Ownership Report | Ibex

Brilliant upgrade @Anuj_Purohit Thanks for sharing all the details!

The swaying could be attributed to poor alignment.

Apollo Apterra AT2 is indeed a great choice. This tyre has esp. lower rolling resistance compared to Geolandars atleast, there won’t be much hit in terms of mileage and performance.

Incidentally your TPMS was showing up 35 odd psi! What is the tyre pressure which you are planning to run? The stock being 26 psi all-around with 195/80R15, for 215/75R15 with slightly taller sidewalls the sweet spot would be 23(or)24 psi all-around. Please check this out.

Another update to the Apollo Apterra AT2 Tyre - 215/75R15

  • Complete Spec - 215/75R15 100T M+S 3PMS Rated
  • Clearance with the boot door panel is ample enough

Wonderful. Looks like 215 is the perfect upgrade. Sweet spot. Thank you so much for those images.

It that a 3 peak symbol for Snow Rated tyres ?
I thought only geolanders were snow rated AT tyres commonly available.

Yes. The symbol means 3PMS rated tires. They signify the tire has been tested for acceleration on medium-packed snow. Braking and turning don’t factor into the testing.
Please see more info here :

Thanks for the sharing details. After a long search, I have sourced Apollo Apterra AT2 tyres.

Can you please let us know the tyre pressure which you are using?

25-26psi all around. It rides like a dream.

You can try with 26 PSI and if you find the ride too soft then increase to 28 PSI. Do report back how you find the ride quality.

Small Update -

Door and underbody damping is done. It as reduced the transmission whining noise to much extent and outside noise is much more muted. Earlier, the door used to rattle on high bass setting. This is also gone away now. A total of 30 sheets where used; I paid around 30K for this.

Have removed the USB port near the 12V socket which is used to connect USB and phone to the Smart Play system. As the USB is specification 2.0 maximum thus it can only provide 500mA current at 5 Volts (2.5Watts) which is not enough to even keep my phone’s charge level. This is now replaced with the following:

EIWA Imp157 USB Power Supply for Suzuki Jimny & Sierra (JB64/JB74), Maximum Output 5V/2.4A x 2, Reversible Port, Automatic Identification, Genuine Same Color LED, USB Power Supply, Dedicated Design, Smartphone and Tablet Charging

To install this, one needs to move the AT gearbox panel which is held by 4 clips ( 2 on each side at the bottom), then a small trim near the driver left leg is to be removed. Further, 2 clips need to be removed to free the panel/trim which hosts the window roll up/down buttons, HDC, and 12v socket with the USB socket.
The original USB socket is part number is 39105M80T00.

Trim removed, note the timbles on the 12V socket. One is a smaller one than the other (hence they are keyed). The blue colored connector one is the original USB port with 4 pin connector.

These two edges/raised plastic tabs holds the original USB socket.

Inserted the new 5A 2.4A x 2 connector. This connector has a male and female thimble joined to be able to use the 12V socket thimbles. These are also keyed i.e. one is smaller than the other to ensure correct polarity.

This is how it looks from the front.

12V positive attached. This is the smaller thimble. Note the “new” male thimble protruding out.

Both thimbles attached and the original power socket also attached. This way, both the 12V and the new 12v to 5v socket gets the power.

Final test before fitment. These are illuminated in warm orange color. Also note that these are reversible.

After fitment of trim panels.

Thanks for the detailed write up Anuj, this is excellent reference for someone wanting to do this very neat USB upgrade for the Jimny.

Your passion clearly shows.

Thanks

At 28 PSI for all 4 tyres, the Jimny is rock solid on the road and yet glides over all the humps and bumps on the road with minimum effort.

Small Update:
Did a Gurgaon - Bhilwara - Gurgaon trip on 29-30-31 July. NH8 was jam packed and it took me around 5 hours to read Jaipur. Looking at the forecast of onward journey, I did off-roading where ever possible to skip the jams. In all saved close to 4 hours; thanks to the Jimny
Few videos from the Dashcam:

Also did some really narrow trail to my farm.

Jimny gives better FE @90km/hr than 70 or 80. I am driving at 30psi cold/32psi hot. At this, it is giving me 16.5km/l tank full method. At 29 psi cold, max I could get was 14. Ride quality is just decent at 30/32 psi. At 29, ride is very good.

During this 1100ish trip; Jimny performed flawless.
My sister sat in the front for 500kms and then in rear for 500kms. As per her feedback, rear seats are similar or better in some cases then the front ones.

Also the damping is working great! One of the best mods till date. Super quite ride!

How much have you clocked till date on the Jimny. Seems like you are putting it to good use

Also how are the tyres performing overall. Braking and wet handling etc.

Good to see Jimny in its natural habitat
How are you dealing with the scratches from bushes & thorns?
