Advice on buying an appropriate Jimny

Hello Friends, My name is Ajit Kirpekar & I’m from Poona. I love the Jimny but haven’t got down to buying one yet. I’m confused if I should get a manual or an auto variant. After getting the Jimny, I intend to join an expedition with Curbover so seek your advice on the preferred transmission. Honestly speaking, I do not see me doing much off roading hence the mind recommends an auto variant however somewhere the heart says manual. Seek some opinions, advice and guidance. Thanks in advance to you all.

Ajitji, Choose AT and your left leg will thank you always. It’s a torque converter so more reliable and if you are going to use it in city most of the time (like me) change the transmission oil every 30-40k Kms and live happily with it !

Thanks for this advice. I was thinking on similar lines. Ive notices that most of the owners change the tyres on this car and especially on the expedition that I have seen. Is that absolutely necessary ? IF yes, what exactly do I look for in terms of upgrades. - Thanks again.

Stock tyres (Mud & Snow) are more than enough for mild to medium offroading, upgrades maybe needed when you plan extreme offroading. I am happy with the stock tyres and the suspension tuning is awesome in stock Jimny, so no plans to change them - you should too if you are planning to use it mostly in city & highways.

Hi Ajit, I bought a Jimny in July, did the CurbOver Spiti expedition in September- October 2025. Drove up & down from Pune to Spiti & back. I’ve been driving only AT Transmissions since 2012, so my opinion may sound biased towards ATs. The AT transmission of the Jimny can give you the do it urself kind of feeling which manual fans desire. The Jimny’s TC AT transmission has an overdrive cut, which limits the gearing to 3rd gear, it has a 2 mode which limits to 2nd gear & an L mode which is 1st gear. These work very well in city traffic, steep climbs & descends & in off road scenarios. The Jimny alpha AT is an amazing & engaging machine which you will absolutely loge

And it would be necessary to change the tyres to ATR 215/75R15 immediately upon buying the Jimny

Hi Gautam, thanks for the insightful guidance. Since you’re from Pune any chances I can reach you to speak with you ? Pls share your number if possible. Warm regards, Ajit.

AT would be the best choice considering the traffic in both city and plains. When you buy a Jimny you intend to go to places where other cars dont go. That would include narrow roads especially in the hilly areas and sometimes you get stuck in traffic. That’s where the AT comes in handy. Jimny is not a sports car where a manual vs auto makes difference. Certain people prefer only manuals if you are one of them then go for manual otherwise AT is great.

Thanks, your suggestion make a lot of sense.
