CurbOver 2WD Low (2L) System — An In-House Innovation That Redefines the Jimny’s Capability
Posted by CurbOver | May 2026
Over the past year, a quiet innovation was brewing inside CurbOver — one that many of you are now familiar with. Today we want to document it properly for the community, because a product this significant deserves more than scattered Telegram messages.
This is the full story of the CurbOver 2WD Low (2L) System — what it is, why it was built, how it works, and what 100 Jimny owners across India now think of it.
The Problem: Why the Jimny’s Part-Time 4WD Is Both Its Strength and Its Limitation
To understand why this kit exists, you first need to understand how the Jimny’s 4WD works.
The Jimny uses a Part-Time 4WD system. In normal driving with the transfer lever in 2H, power goes to the rear axle only. Shift to 4H or 4L and power goes to both front and rear axles simultaneously.
Here’s the catch: the Jimny has no centre differential.
A centre differential allows the front and rear axles to rotate at slightly different speeds — critical when turning, because the inside and outside wheels trace different radii. Without one, engaging 4WD forces both axles to rotate at exactly the same rate. On loose surfaces like mud, sand, or gravel, this is fine — the tyres slip slightly to compensate. But on firm, paved ground, there is no slip. The tension between the front and rear axles starts building up. Steering becomes stiff. And if you push further, something gives — the gearbox, transfer case, axles, or differentials absorb the punishment.
This is called transmission wind-up, and it is why the Jimny manual explicitly forbids using 4WD on paved roads.
But paved roads in India aren’t always flat or forgiving. Think:
- The 36-hairpin Masanagudi climb to Ooty
- The Sigur ghats in the Nilgiris
- Steep parking ramps and car wash ramps in cities
- Mountain passes at 12,000+ feet where the Jimny struggles for torque in 2H
And here lies the dilemma: You need the torque of 4L, but you cannot safely engage 4L.
There’s a second problem as well. At altitudes above 13,000 feet, the Jimny’s vacuum-driven hub engagement system struggles. The green 4WD indicator blinks but the front hubs don’t fully lock. Driving in this state risks hub damage. Many owners have been stranded — wanting more capability but unable to engage 4WD safely.
Introducing the CurbOver 2WD Low (2L) System
The 2L System was designed entirely in-house by CurbOver — from concept to manufacturing to testing. The idea is deceptively simple:
Give the Jimny the gear ratio of 4L while keeping the drivetrain in 2WD mode.
When you engage the 2L System, the front hubs are electronically disengaged. The transfer lever stays in the 4L position, so you have the low-range gear ratio (approximately double the torque at the wheels compared to 2H). But since the front hubs aren’t locked, only the rear wheels are driven. No transmission wind-up. No risk to the drivetrain on paved roads.
The result: full low-range torque, entirely through the rear axle, safely usable on tarmac.
You can also use 2L as a starting point and switch to full 4L on the fly — just toggle the switch while moving (at under 30 km/h), and the car transitions from 2WD Low to 4WD Low. This is perfect for approaching a technical off-road section via tarmac.
What’s In the Box
The same level of care has gone into this kit as with every CurbOver product. Here is what comes in the box:
The Wiring Harness
- Main power cable: triple-insulated — silicone cable + PVC tube + nylon mesh outer layer
- All internal wires are individually PVC-tube insulated
- Every wire is labelled with a number. Relay terminals have matching numbered markings. The chance of miswiring is essentially zero.
- Every connection is either crimped, soldered, or both.
The Transfer Case Connectors
- The OEM connectors at the transfer case are single-sealed for water resistance. The 2L harness uses double-sealed connectors — better than factory.
The Relay
- Environmentally sealed against water and dust.
- Comes with 3M double-sided tape for clean mounting near the handbrake.
The Switch
- Not a generic fog-lamp switch. This is a custom-designed switch, manufactured in a single-piece high-quality plastic moulding process, laser-etched with the CurbOver 4x4 logo and the 2L function icon.
- Features an orange backlight and a green LED indicator that glows when 2L is active.
- Fits perfectly into the blank switch slots next to the handbrake lever in the Jimny — exactly as if Maruti had designed it.
- Protected by a bezel that prevents accidental activation.
Also Included
- OBD Scanner (for clearing a specific fault code that can occasionally appear under a very particular edge-case condition described in the manual)
- Full printed User Manual and Installation Guide — written by the CurbOver team with input from TSS, who spent considerable time reviewing and refining it
- CurbOver sticker
- Cable ties for securing the underbody harness
Price: Rs. 8,177/-
How to Use the 2L System
- Move the transfer lever to 4L (come to a brief stop or slow to under 10 km/h, as you normally would)
- Press the 2L switch — the green LED illuminates, the 4WD indicator on the dashboard goes off
- You are now in 2L mode — rear-wheel drive with low-range gear ratio
- Maximum recommended speed: 30 km/h
- To switch to full 4L on the fly: press the switch again (at under 30 km/h)
- To disengage 2L: press the switch off, then return the lever to 2H
Important: If the switch is turned on while the lever is in 2H, the switch illuminates but has no effect. The system only activates when the lever is in 4L.
Note on high altitude: At altitudes where 4WD won’t engage (blinking green indicator), move the lever to 4L, then activate the 2L switch. The system will disengage the front hubs, clearing the blinking indicator. You now have 2L torque even where full 4WD cannot engage. As the CurbOver team puts it: “2L will engage even if you take the Jimny to the Moon.”
Testing & Reliability
Before a single kit was shipped, the system was driven from Bangalore to Chikmagalur — 250 kilometres — with the system switched on for over 8 hours, through highway, trails, broken roads, and a thorough high-pressure underbody wash. Zero issues.
In total, over 600 kilometres of testing across all conditions was completed before kits went to members.
Power consumption: 0.6 amps — minimal draw from the fuse box.
The system does not interact with the ECU under normal use. There is one very specific edge case (engaging the switch before moving the lever to 4L, then speeding over 40 km/h for more than 5 seconds) that can trigger a harmless fault code — which is why the OBD scanner is included. The manual covers this in detail.
Installation
The 2L System is entirely plug-and-play. No wires are cut, no holes drilled, no permanent modifications made to the vehicle. It can be fully removed at any time, leaving the Jimny exactly as it was from the factory.
Installation involves:
- Sliding under the car to access the two transfer case couplers (a TC protection plate does not need to be removed)
- Unplugging the OEM couplers and connecting the 2L harness in-line
- Routing the power wire under the passenger seat carpet and into the cabin (seat removal makes this easier, but a curtain spring or cable guide can thread it without removing the seat)
- Connecting the fuse tap to the fuse box under the glove box
- Mounting the switch in the blank slot next to the handbrake
Time required: ~35–40 minutes with a practiced mechanic. DIY owners typically take 1–2 hours.
Installation Support Across India
CurbOver organised multiple installation camps in Bangalore (Yashika Garage, Yelahanka), and helped members connect with mechanics in Delhi NCR (Nazim: +91 78382 14197, ~Rs. 1,500), Gurgaon/Faridabad (Om Automobile, Sector 15A: 9899102101, Rs. 800–1,000), and other cities.

Member Testimonials
Here is what the CurbOver community had to say after getting the kit installed and using it in the real world:
Real Life Experience from a group member. In his own words.
“The vehicle felt like it was on steroids.”
Naveen Kumar, Bangalore — Ooty Masanagudi climb
“Those who have driven Ooty masanagudi climb will know the struggle of Jimny in that stretch especially after the 2nd hairpin bend (it has 36 hairpin bends in total). Today was no different — I did struggle until hairpin #8. Then I pulled over and engaged the 2L lever and switched on the CurbOver 2Low switch. The difference was immediately noticeable. My wife was surprised by the pull and thought I had done some major upgrade to add power. It’s the increased torque which made the difference. I ran the 2Low all the way from Hairpin #8 through to Hairpin #36 — approximately 30 minutes — which covers the bulk of the challenging climb. The kit worked seamlessly without any drama during engagement or the climb.”
“He actually thought at first that this is an International functional accessory.”
Shankar Balan, Bangalore
“Today morning I showed my friend the 2L — he is visiting from KL, owns a Thar plus 2 Gypsys and several other cars. Loves trails and uses these vehicles in his farm in Wayanad. He was mightily impressed with 2L — I demonstrated it in the ramp at ITC Gardenia and the torque and traction are super amazing. He was even more blown away when I said this is an entirely in-house, personal design, manufacturing, testing and quality control by the CurbOver team. He actually thought at first that this is an International functional accessory. Hats off to CurbOver and this wonderful invention!”
“It looks like OEM manufactured off a production line.”
Angshuman Roy, Bangalore
"Hats off to the minute attention to detail that has gone into every aspect of the entire package! The look, feel, craftsmanship and the quality of the harness and its sub-components is very premium — it looks like OEM manufactured off a production line! The installation and Operation guide booklet will give any OEM Owner’s manual a run for its money! All pertinent information is thoughtfully and beautifully presented. An OBD scanner is included and a CurbOver sticker has been thoughtfully added!
The installation itself was pretty straightforward and smooth. Now the wait begins for steep mountain slopes, sharp hairpin bends and nearly non-existent tarmac to put this into good use!"
“The 2L system is such a beautiful feature.”
Arjun Shetty, Bangalore — rock crawl test
“I’ve tested it during an extremely slow rock crawl, did a full circle on a ~30 degree incline, just light throttle and no clutch engaged on my MT — it was just perfect, no grinding, no whining, no wheel slips, and as easy as one could ever imagine. Thank you again to the CurbOver team for all that you do for our Jimnys to better our off-loading experiences.”
“It is a work of art.”
Guruprasad Srikantan, Bangalore
“Thanks a ton for designing and implementing a beautiful system. It is a work of art — great to see the smallest detail made to perfection. The installation was so neat.”
“It has re-defined the capability of the Jimny.”
TSS, Delhi
“Thanks for conceptualising and designing this wonderful system. It has re-defined the capability of the Jimny.”
“The kit is a life saver.”
Akash Singh
“I was getting my car washed in a new place and they had an awkward type of ramp. I had to use a bit of clutch and gas to climb. The next day, same situation — I engaged the kit and the car just climbed it without struggling, like it didn’t even notice. Glad it’s there now. Less clutch burn.”
“Tested it on a trail — made 3-point turns noticeably easier.”
Street Hawk
“Tested the 2L system on a trail recently. Although the terrain was dry, a few steep inclines still required shifting to 4L. There were several tight sections needing 3-point turns, and 2L made maneuvering through those turns noticeably easier, providing the required torque.”
“Not just enhanced capability — peace of mind too.”
Aditya Narayan
“I used the switch for the first time for transportation of my Jimny to my new location. Now all the anxiety of misuse of the 4x4 is gone just with this one switch. It not only enhances the capabilities of the car but also ensures peace of mind during transportation / valet parking. The driver simply cannot engage 4WD even if they try.”
“I didn’t even need to remove the passenger seat — installation complete, works like OEM without a glitch.”
Aditya Narayan (DIY install)
“Received it today and it’s really very fine and high-end quality.”
Manish Tully, Delhi NCR

First Batch: Sold Out
The first batch sold out completely, with 64+ kits shipped and installed across Bangalore, Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Pune, Chennai, Lucknow, Siliguri, Paonta Sahib, and more cities.
A waiting list is now open for a potential second batch. If you missed the first batch, add your name in this thread. A new batch will only be considered once there is sufficient demand to meet the minimum order quantity for the custom components.
A Note on This Innovation
The CurbOver 2L System is not assembled from off-the-shelf parts. The custom switch alone required months of sourcing, design iterations, and import logistics. The harness was engineered specifically for the Gen 4 Jimny — every wire gauge, seal, terminal, and connector chosen to meet or exceed OEM specifications. Multiple prototypes were built and discarded. Over 600 kilometres of test routes were driven before shipping a single kit.
Several members suggested filing a patent. The product is that original.
What makes this particularly remarkable: the Jimny is sold in dozens of countries. Not a single manufacturer or aftermarket company anywhere in the world has offered this specific functionality for the Gen 4 Jimny. CurbOver did it first. In-house. For the community.
As fellow member Arjab Basu put it best: “To Maruti folks, the Jim is just a piece of flotsam. But the CurbOver team — the passion and the ‘let’s do it’ attitude — they want the Jimny to have nothing but the best, and it shows.”
