Greetings ! I wanted to carry at least 20 litres of extra fuel for my long trip to Ladakh and Spiti this year. I do not have a top rack installed as I personally don’t like the look of it.
What are the options for mounting jerry cans ?
I’ve seen in a few videos (CurbOver’s Spiti Expedition Video) where two cans are mounted on the spare wheel but I am unable to find a direct link to purchase these.
Found one here but not sure how reliable this is

Hi. As someone who has done both Ladakh (Umling La) and Spiti (in the winters earlier this year) in a Jimny, carrying a 20 lt jerry can in the boot, I can plainly say that the Jimny is good for a 500+ km range even in mixed conditions driving and didn’t require me to add from the spare can between available pumps. Eventually, I emptied the can into the car, just to use up the fuel.
The main concern of carrying fuel inside the car is fume leaks. But if you can grab hold of a good quality can like mine, there’ll be zero emissions even at extreme altitudes or rough roads. Securing the can snugly between luggage and strapping down with luggage nets makes it safer. Mounting anywhere externally on the Jimny doesn’t agree with me. It’s a light car and top loading or side loading with 20 kilos or more make me uncomfortable with the altered dynamics.
Anyway, my point is - do not underestimate the operating range of the Jimny. It has more than adequate go if you just remember to fill up at every opportunity.

Earlier I have been using a diesel car my excursions into the hills . I used to carry diesel in empty engine oil cans , supposedly made of very good quality material given the cost of the thing they would originally carry . I have also used a 40 ltrs can purchased from a roadside garage in Haldwani and suffered some nauseating experiences. Note it guys . Fire is maybe the last hazard you would encounter. And if it does happen you are going to pay really heavy . However fuel being carried within the cabin has more than one way of ruining your whole experience of the trip - from constant smell emerging from uncertain source to spills or even suffocation in case you wish to use the car itself as a tent . When you have already given a thought to carrying extra fuel then do carry in a posh legit way . Do not take liberty with hazardous stuff.
