Why is premium spark plugs worth buying than standard spark plugs?

Hi all, hope everyone is doing well. I have written this detailed information on why premium sparks plugs are better than standard ones. Sharing my thoughts after research and understanding and hope it helps others too.

Standard copper or nickel spark plugs are limited in ways that affect how well they ignite the fuel, not just how long they last.

Copper is soft and melts easily, so the electrode tip must be thick and coated in nickel to survive the heat.

But for Ruthenium or Iridium the metals are incredibly hard and have very high melting points. which allows the companies to make the electrode tip thinest to have sparking controlled and constant in every compression.
Electricity jumps from a sharp point much easier than from a flat. A thin plug requires less voltage from the ignition coils to create a spark. This reduces strain on your coils and makes sures that there’s a spark even under high load like sudden acceleration.

Also check the details on flame quenching.
When a spark fires it creates a tiny form of flame. If the metal electrode around it is thick like a standard plug then that cold metal absorbs the heat and can quench (extinguish or weaken) the flame point before it spreads.
But for the tiny tips of Ruthenium/Iridium plugs the flame point stays out of the way, allowing the flame to expand faster and hotter.

The Ruthenium or Iridium provide a more stable spark during cold starts when the air and fuel mixture is rich and it’s harder to ignite. But with RX results in a smoother idle rather than the rough idling sometimes felt with standard plugs in cold weather.

Even when brand new standard spark plugs used the thick electrode demands more voltage and blocks flame growth aka quenching. You are limiting your engine’s efficiency from mile 1 which is not the case in Ruthenium or Iridium spark plugs.

Awesome article. Thanks for sharing these very interesting and relevant facts on the advantages of these premium spark plugs.

The ultra smooth idling and smooth free revving of the engine is quite clearly discernible once you install these plugs.

Thanks once again for sharing.

Hello Friends, I’d like to add my 2 bits here. If you see the picture above you see two electrodes on the spark plug. The first is on the periphery and bent, and the second one is in a ceramic housing in the centre. The gap between these two electrodes creates a spark that ignites the fuel.

The bent part of the electrode is always copper with a nickel plating. Copper has the highest conductivity amongst the metals mentioned above so is the case. The electrode in the middle is made of tungsten (Wolfram) and also metals mentioned above. Due to the constant arcking (sparking) the central electrode tends to get worn rather quickly. Hard metals like Tungsten and others reduce the ware however the harder the material the longer it lasts. This hardness is detrimental to the current flow which causes the central electrode to heat up faster. Therefore for a longer life Iridium tipped plugs are used. They are also recommended in performance cars and bikes. In my opinion, for a car like the Jimmy, it does not make a noticeable difference. Also the point of better idling is not related with the spark plug material but the fuel used, any dirt in the fuel and / or damages to the central electrode.

Using the premium plugs will definitely not harm the vehicle in any way.

Thanks for the more detailed explanation. However if you use these premium Iridium or Ruthenium spark plugs in any car, Jimny or otherwise the first thing you notice immediately is the ultra smooth idling. The consistent spark created by these plugs results in the idling RPM remaining very very consistent.

Fuel quality is of-coursea factor but as the normal spark plugs wear out the gap between the Cathode and Anode becomes irregular and causes different length and intensity of the spark produced. That inconsistency results in a varying idling RPM. This issue does not happen with the premium plugs and hence the idling and overall acceleration remains smoother.

I first used these plugs over 20 years ago and noticed this behaviour in all my cars once I put in these premium plugs.

If you install these plugs you will notice the difference immediately as well.
