Winter Drive to Spiti

Hi Everyone,

I am planning to take Jimny to Spiti from Mumbai, during the months of December or January via Shimla.

Is it possible to do it ? What precautions should I take and what should I carry for emergency ?

Any help is appreciated .

Precautions:

  • Get your Jimny winter-ready:

    • Snow tires: Essential for traction on icy roads.
    • Chains: Carry them in case you encounter extreme conditions.
    • Engine coolant: Winter-specific coolant to prevent freezing.
    • Battery check: Ensure it’s in good condition to handle cold starts.
    • Underbody protection: Skid plates to shield against hidden hazards.
  • Inform authorities: Register your trip with the local police and Border Roads Organisation (BRO).

  • Weather updates: Monitor weather forecasts closely and be prepared to adjust your plans if needed.

  • Fuel: Carry extra fuel as stations might be scarce.

  • Emergency kit: Pack essentials like warm clothes, blankets, high-calorie food, first-aid kit, and a power bank.

  • Communication: Invest in a satellite phone or portable hotspot for areas with weak signal.

  • Driving skills: Be a confident driver comfortable with snow and mountain terrain.

Additional tips:

  • Join a convoy: Consider going with a group of experienced Spiti winter riders for support and safety.
  • Acclimatize: Spend a few days in Manali or Shimla to adjust to the high altitude before heading to Spiti.
  • Respect the locals: Be mindful of their culture and traditions.

Resources:

Remember, safety first! Don’t hesitate to turn back if conditions become too dangerous.

Happy Spiti adventures!

That’s really helpful. I am used to challenging mountain terrain but never drove on snow. I think convoy is better suited for first timers.
